I have spent twenty-six years writing people down.
It began as one magazine for mothers. We sat at kitchen tables and we listened — to a first small business, a hard winter, a child who finally found her footing. I thought I was making a magazine. I was keeping a record.
The community grew, and the record grew with it. 1,400 interviews. 300 issues. Somewhere along the way, the people we wrote about stopped being a small community and started becoming a culture — one that New York now looks at, and the world is beginning to.
The KORISE is the next chapter. The chair is the same, and so is the listening. What changed is the size of the story: from a community's voice to the world's stage.
I am not a reporter. I am someone who pays attention. I have always believed that a community remembered well becomes a community that is strong — strong enough that others come to us, not the other way around. That belief is the whole reason this exists.
So this is less a magazine than a promise: to keep writing us down, well, while it still matters. I hope you'll join the record.
